My father 'graduated' from a rigorous course of radiation and chemotherapy this week, and we decided to have a little fun with it. Jean, his wonderful radiation oncology nurse, helped him keep his sense of humor throughout the ordeal. In my opinion, humor and authenticity make the best medicine.

I am not usually a dog person. But I fell in love with this little mutt at the 300-year-old farmhouse where we stayed in the Azores. There were three little dogs (not much bigger than cats) and one big dog who lived on the streets in a nearby village and spent lots of time at the farmhouse because the innkeeper could not resist feeding them. The dogs had dirty, mangy fur, but they formed such an enthusiastic welcoming committee every time they saw us, that we could not help but laugh and play with them. (We just made sure to wash our hands afterwards.) Piro Lito was the littlest and spunkiest of them all, using his considerable charm to melt the hearts of human beings, while showing Big Dog who was really in charge. (We actually felt kind of sorry for Big Dog, but that's another story.) Panda, resting in the background, was older and mellower -- she was my husband's favorite.

This is the starting point for the self-portrait that I posted on 9/16.
If you're wondering, yes, those are toilets (actually water closets) in the background. I took this photo in a public bathroom in the Azores (Portugal) that I had all to myself. I loved the photographic possibilities presented by the reflective tiles on the wall.

After being away from my blog for several months, I thought I'd post something to mark where I am in my journey. Lots of life changes are now pointing me in a positive direction, but the details are yet to be fleshed out. I start graduate school tomorrow.

This started out as a picture of the cute squirrel that has been keeping us amused outside our front window. He's been tunneling around in the 12 inches of new snowfall around the bird feeder. Every once in a while we look out and see a head popping up out of nowhere. I got bored with the original photo and decided to make it more abstract. The histogram is off the charts, but for some reason, this one appeals to me.

This is one of those times I wish I had an SLR with a good macro lens. My aim was to show the anatomy of an icicle, but with my camera's limited manual focus and my limited photoshop skills, it's fuzzier than I'd like. More like a charcoal drawing.

We got nearly 3 feet of snow in last week's big snow storm and spent a good share of the weekend removing it from our roof. The only way to trudge through all the white stuff was on snowshoes. Here, the sun illuminates one of the jagged paths I made while wrestling with the roof rake. The shadowy foreground is one of the large snowbanks that are piling up around the periphery of our house. Jericho. Vermont.

I was on assignment to photograph snow and shadows, but when I propped open the kitchen door to capture the shadows on my snowy back porch, I noticed some interesting geometric patterns forming on the storm door -- where the warm indoor air and very cold outdoor air came together. I found the distraction much more interesting than my intended subject.

What a difference a day can make. From ice on Friday to recordbreaking warm temperatures in the 60s and swelling rivers on Saturday. It's cooling down again today -- in the 40s -- but still way above normal. Jericho, Vermont.
